Browsing the 2009 January archive

That is the title of a new report from the Albany-based Fiscal Policy Institute.  The report concludes that New York is denying SUNY and CUNY the funds needed to deal with enrollment increases.  Read the full report.

NYSHEI News is moving.

From now on the news blog will be found at http://nyshei.org/blog.  This change will not affect you if you traditionally come to it through the NYSHEI home page or through links in the NYSHEI E-News.  However, if you have bookmarked http://nyshei.wordpress.com or subscribed to the News feed here you will want to change your browser’s bookmark and your news feed subscription

If you have not subscribed to the NYSHEI news feed in the past, please try it out – if you use Firefox’s live bookmarks, Google’s Reader (or numerous other news readers/aggregators) add this new feed URL and you are ready to go.  If you have never subscribed to a news feed, it is a great way to read over the latest headlines and tidbits of information on your own terms.  Wikipedia.org has a nice overview on web (or news) feed http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_fee

Why we are moving the blog?  While we have have happily used the WordPress.com hosted service for over a year now, moving NYSHEI news to a local blog we give us more control over the look and usability of the blog.  I hope you enjoy the change.

Intensive lobbying has begun as NYSHEI is fighting to protect the interests of academic and research libraries.

Is there something you would like said to your elected officials?

Do you have a story that clearly illustrates the important role of your library in research and learning?

Is there some fact you think it essential they understand?

If you could say one thing about the state budget (as it regards libraries only) what would it be?

Help NYSHEI help you.  Please post your comments, share your thoughts, expertise and experience.  Anything you can do to help state policy makers understand the importance and challenges of academic and research libraries is appreciated.

It seems to me that our political leaders are making a case for ARIA, the NYSHEI proposal for a statewide information infrastructure.

On January 8, at George Mason University, President-elect Barack Obama set forth his argument for a massive federal spending program intended to spur economic recovery.  In doing so Obama said that his spending program “will equip tens of thousands of schools, community colleges and public universities with 21st-century classrooms, labs and libraries.”

New York Governor David Paterson, in his January 7 State of the State address, presented his vision for our state’s economic recovery.  Paterson said that we must spend tax dollars “more effectively” to build a “vibrant economy” through “careful and constructive infrastructure investments,” particularly those that “maximize the extraordinary academic and scientific resources” of New York.

NYSHEI is working to make sure that our elected officials understand the cost-effective benefits of ARIA’s public-private partnership, and leverage our academic and research libraries to fulfill their own promises of innovative economic growth.
